Overview

UW Credit Union is seeking a Mortgage Underwriter II to join our dynamic Mortgage Loan Operations team.  The Mortgage Underwriter II is responsible for evaluating complex mortgage loan applications, including FHA, VA, WHEDA, construction, conforming, and non-conforming mortgage loan applications in accordance with internal policies, all UWCU current investor guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA), and applicable federal and state regulations. This role provides mentorship, training, and guidance to Underwriter I’s. This role ensures loan quality, compliance, and risk mitigation while delivering exceptional service to internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite conventional, conforming, non-conforming, lot, WHEDA, FHA, VA, Construction and Portfolio first mortgage loans using AUS (DU/LPA) and manual underwriting when required, to company and investor guidelines.
  • Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, and collateral to assess risk and determine loan eligibility.
  • Review appraisals and property valuations to ensure compliance with investor and regulatory standards.
  • Offer alternative loan solutions to the Processor and Mortgage Loan Officer when appropriate.
  • Ensure loan quality by adhering to internal policies, investor guidelines, and all regulatory requirements including (ECOA, HMDA, TILA, RESPA).
  • Maintain accurate documentation and data integrity in the loan origination system.
  • Identify and investigate high-risk or complex files, provide recommendations, and escalate to management as appropriate.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and quality control reviews.
  • Maintain current understanding of all investor, state and federal guidelines and regulations including Regulation Z (Truth in Lending Act), Regulation C (HMDA), TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Rule (TRID), Fair Credit Report Act (FCRA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), and other regulations that apply to Mortgage Lending.
  • Prepare denial notice and communicate the loan decision to the appropriate internal
  • Prepare Pending loan letters as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate efficient and proper use of resources, including the Mortgage HUB while maintaining a consistent productivity base with an emphasis on a high level of accuracy.
  • Demonstrate results within the Scorecard and maintain a minimum Satisfactory rating in all weighted areas.
  • Meet or exceed Scorecard goals related to:
    - Turnaround time for underwriting decisions.
      - Productivity and throughput, including number of files underwritten per day/week.
  • Any other measurable performance metric deemed appropriate.
  • Lead or assist in onboarding and development of new underwriting staff.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for Underwriter I staff, Mortgage Processors, and loan officers.
  • Respond to inquiries from internal staff regarding underwriting criteria, loan scenarios, and documentation.
  • Deliver high-quality service to internal stakeholders, ensuring a positive experience for members and partners.
  • Collaborate with processors, loan officers, and closers to resolve conditions and ensure timely loan closings.
  • Provide clear and professional communication regarding underwriting decisions and documentation requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as an Engaged Member of the Mortgage Underwriting Team.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Business, Banking, Finance or related field.
  • 4-5 years of Mortgage Lending experience. 
  • FHA Direct Endorsement Designation.
  • VA Staff Appraisal Review Designation.
  • Knowledge of FNMNFHLMC/FHLB/Government/Secondary Market underwriting guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective real estate lending and processing requirements.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of current appraisal review
