  • Overview

    As a member of the UW Credit Union leadership team, the Director of ERM and Compliance will be responsible for directing the development, implementation and execution of the credit union’s enterprise risk management program. The Director’s responsibility will be to integrate risk management into the business strategy of the organization and champion a risk culture that aligns with the credit union’s stated risk appetite.  The Director will also be responsible for monitoring regulatory compliance changes and identify compliance implications of changes to credit union products and business operations. 


    This position must effectively carry out the essential duties of this position in a manner that consistently demonstrates the core values of the organization in a positive manner.


    1) Develop and Supervise ERM Program - 45%

    a. Provide leadership to the credit union in developing and maintaining the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) strategy for the credit union

    b. Develop and maintain ERM policy monitoring reports as required by Board policy. Provide expert guidance to board directors and executive leadership on leveraging ERM reporting to guide credit union strategy

    c. Champion internal communications strategy to establish ERM as part of the credit union’s risk culture

    d. Act as liaison to standing risk committees (ALCO, Investment, Credit, ISSC) to integrate existing risk mitigation strategies into ERM framework

    e. Provide key data, insight and reporting to Executive and Leadership teams on risks and opportunities identified through ERM program to inform strategic and business planning processes

    f. Monitor emerging risk trends and perform risk assessments with affected business areas when new risks are identified

    g. Serve as subject matter expert and advisor to management staff creating risk assessments for new products and operational enhancements

    h. Serve as subject matter expert to assist in the development of key risk indicators and key performance indicators for monitoring key risks and mitigation strategies

    i. Work in close coordination with internal audit to provide ERM program data to inform the annual internal audit plan

    j. Serve as key point of contact for external auditors and regulators during audits and exams


    2) Compliance Leadership - 40%

    a. Serve as Chair of the Risk and Compliance Committee

    b. Monitor proposed and final regulatory compliance changes and advise affected departments of expected impacts and the development of responses

    c. Serve as standing member of project teams responding to regulatory compliance changes

    d. Serve as subject matter expert to business initiative teams to determine compliance impacts to new products and operational enhancements

    e. Serve as subject matter expert in the development of employee training related to compliance and risk mitigation


    3) Project Leadership/Strategic Research - 15%

    a. Under direction of CLO, perform research projects related to enterprise strategic planning and risk mitigation proposals

    b. In conjunction with project services, develop and execute project plans to implement new risk mitigation proposals using change management best practices

    c. As a member of the Leadership Team, participate in strategic planning, annual improvement plans, and credit union wide budgeting and resource allocation. Participate in strategic projects and cross functional initiatives

    d. Assist in representing legal division initiatives at board and staff events



    -Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Risk Management required

    -Juris Doctorate or MBA preferred

    -Risk Management Certification (CUERME, NCRM, or similar) preferred


    Experience & Skills:

    -10-11 years in Financial Services required

    -4-5 years of Risk Management or Compliance Leadership preferred

    -Strong business and financial services background with the ability to identify risk in all areas of the credit union

    -Excellence in verbal and written communication skills

    -Demonstrated ability to research State and Federal compliance regulations applicable to the financial services industry and develop operational processes and internal controls to meet regulatory requirements

    -Strong analytical skills and comfort with using technological tools to conduct in-depth risk analysis

    -Experience with project problem diagnosis, solution development, facilitation of decision making and documentation

    -Demonstrated persistence and willingness to question and challenge status quo while building consensus among peers

    -Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships and display a high degree of emotional intelligence.

    -Ability to influence others without direct oversight or reporting relationship

    -In-depth understanding of the strategic planning process
